در چنـد دهـه‌ی اخیـر، شـاهد برآمـدن اشـکال گوناگونـی از پوپولیسـم و همچنیـن خوانش‌ها، روایت‌هـا و تحلیل‌هـای متفاوتـی از ایـن پدیـده در سراسـر جهـان بوده‌ایـم. امـروزه، پوپولیسـم از حیـث مفهومـی و نیـز گسـتره‌ی جغرافیایـی بـه‌حـدی بسـط یافتـه کـه از گونه‌هـای مختلفـی ماننـد پوپولیسـم انتخاباتـی، نولیبـرال، نفتـی، مذهبـی، سیاسـی، ایدئولوژیـک، چپ و راسـت، اقتدارگـرا، اقتصـادی، رسـانه‌ای، کیفـری (جزایـی) قومـی، اخلاق‌گـرا، مشـارکتی، اروپایـی، اسـلامی و ... می توان سـخن گفت. نوشـتار پیش رو، عمدتاً کوششـی اسـت در سـاحت نظـری (بـا نگاهـی بـه مصادیق عینـی پوپولیسـم) برای پاسـخ‌گویی بـه این دو پرسـش: نخسـت، ویژگی‌هـا و ماهیـت پوپولیسـم چیسـت و نحـوه‌ی عملکـرد آن چگونـه اسـت؟ و دوم، پیـروزی احـزاب و رهبـران پوپولیسـتی در سراسـر جهـان و اقبـال عمومـی مـردم بـه آنهـا در دو دهـه‌ی گذشـته چـه دلایلـی دارد؟ یافته‌های پژوهش نشـان می‌دهد که شـکل‌گیری ایـن پدیده در کنار سـایر عوامل، عمدتاً ناشـی از بحران دموکراسـی، به‌ویژه سسـت‌شـدن سیاسـت نمایندگی، بحـران سـاختارهای میانجی و غیرپاسـخگوشـدن نخبگان الیگارشـی حاکم اسـت؛ وضعیتی که رسـانه‌ای‌شـدن سیاسـت و ظهـور رهبـران پوپولیسـتی نیز فرآینـد به‌قـدرت‌رسـیدن آن را بیش از پیـش همـوار سـاخته اسـت. روش پژوهش کیفـی، از نـوع تبیین علّـی و روش گـردآوری داده‌ها، کتابخانـه‌ای و همچنیـن بهره‌گیـری از منابـع اینترنتی اسـت.
